Short tutorial - sending pictures as e-mail attachments

Tired of the uninvited, odious, commercial email that clogs up your mailbox?

We hate it, too, which is why we participate in national efforts to stop spammers and refuse to accept mail from recognized spammers. We turn back thousands of messages every day, not letting them past our servers and into your box.

But we can't filter mail addressed specifically to you. How do advertisers get your address? They're crafty about getting you on their "opt-in" mailing list. Entering a contest, subscribing to things like news updates or weather reports end up putting you on many email lists. Most of us don't read the fine print when taking advantage of these offers but nearly all of them include adding the subscriber to marketing email lists and these lists normally include many advertisers.

What's the best defense? We recommend software that will filter your incoming mail, separating the mail you want from the mail you don't. Then you glance at the junk, making sure there's nothing you want, trash it and get on with the email that's important. There are several good, inexpensive programs that are quick and easy to download. One we recommend is iHateSpam - not just because we love the name, but because it's quite effective, and FREE (plus shipping & handling) after mail-in rebate if you get it now. Click here to get it.

In today's fast-paced world, sometimes even the rapid response of email isn't fast enough - primarily because you don't know if the other person is currently online. And if you're having an online conversation by email, you have to click through several steps to read, reply and send.

That's why Instant Messaging is becoming ever more popular.

Instant Messaging (IM) lets you form a buddy or contact list. If you want to IM with someone on your list, send a message. If you're both online, a window opens, allowing you and your friend to type messages you both can see. You can also create your own custom chat rooms with friends, family or coworkers.

To IM or chat, we suggest Trillian (http://trillian.cc/trillian/index.html) which allows you to connect with all the major chat networks, including friends on different platforms including AOL, MSN, ICQ, IRC, and Yahoo. Or register with AOL Instant Messenger - it's free and you don't have to be a member. Click here to download AOL Instant Messenger.

It's spring storm season. Lightning strikes can send electricity surging through computer equipment, even if it's not turned on. A lightning pop can cause extensive damage to your computer and can zap a Broadband modem. Don't endanger your expensive PC or disrupt your super-speed Internet connection. Take a low-tech approach to protecting your high-tech equipment: pull the plug. (Please make sure that you shut down your computer before you "pull the plug.") Unplug your PC and modem when storms are predicted if you won't be available to unplug your system when a storm develops.

Answer: Yes. It's one of the best features of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Just go to the File menu, select "Save As," and look for the line labeled "Save as type." On this line, choose the option for "Web archive, single file." Then, select the destination folder, and click "Save."

This will produce a file with the extension "mht". Later, even if you're not connected to the Internet, you can open these files in Internet Explorer by double-clicking on them. You will then see a copy of the Web page, complete with graphics.

An easy way to send photos to friends and family is to attach them to an e-mail message. These may be photos that you've scanned in to your computer or downloaded from your digital camera. Here's how to attach a photo in Outlook:

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. Create a new message and prepare it for sending by addressing it, giving it a subject name (i.e. "Graduation Photos") and composing a message.

  3. Click on the "Attach" (paperclip) button on the toolbar. The "Insert File" dialog box will appear.

  4. Type the name of the file containing the photo into the "File Name" field or simply browse to the desired file and click on it to select it. Note: You can attach more than one picture to an e-mail but remember that the more files you select to send as attachments to one e-mail message, the longer it will take you to send it and for the recipient to receive his/her mail - especially on a dial-up connection. If you have several photos to send, consider sending them separately attached to several e-mail messages.

  5. Click the "Insert" button and then send your message.

We hope you found this newsletter to be informative. It's our way of keeping you posted on some of the latest happenings. If, however, you'd prefer not to receive these bulletins on a monthly basis, send us an e-mail at and type REMOVE in the subject line.

Thanks for your business!
